Today, I'm going to start with the most important topic that I deal with every day - What is Health? I will try to clear up some of the misconceptions and inaccuracies that we as a nation have developed about the definition of health.

What is health?

It seems like a question so simple that my two-year-old would be able to answer it. When I ask my patients, the most common answer is, "When I feel good." It would be great if feeling good had anything to do with health, but it doesn't. Did you know that most people who die of a heart attack didn't even know they had heart disease? Or that most cancers don't cause any signs or symptoms until the later stages of the disease? So, symptoms have nothing to do with health.

Health Defined

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Talk about a lofty goal when you say, "This is the year I get healthy!" Ask yourself if you meet the WHO definition. Do I live in a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being? If not, then you're not healthy.

Health From Without vs. Health From Within

To achieve health, we have to determine where health comes from. Think back to when you cut your finger and put a bandage on it. What healed your finger, the bandage or your body? Have you ever broken a bone? Did the cast heal your bone or did your body heal the bone? The obvious answer to both questions is that your body healed you. So, health comes from within. But in the U.S., we have been sold on the idea that health comes from outside the body. When you watch TV, read the newspaper, or listen to the radio, you are bombarded by ads for the latest prescription medications. They promise to relieve your symptoms but do they make you healthy? No. What about surgery? The human body is an amazingly designed organism. The body functions best when all of your pieces and parts are working properly and when they’re all still inside your body. Does your gall bladder work better before it’s removed or after? We don’t have extra parts. You just need to keep those parts functioning properly.

Getting and Staying Healthy

If "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.", then how do you achieve health? That’s a great question that I’ll help you answer next week…

Chiropractically yours,

Dr. Devin
